The first and best way to protect yourself is knowledge. Know the types of scams that are out there and what to do if you encounter one of them. If in doubt, ask your Bank. They are well aware of most scams, and they have access to resources should something come up that is new to them.

Suggestions on protecting yourself and your information:

Good security habits:

  • Know who you are communicating with before giving out your information
  • Don’t give out your information to anyone who requests it. Hang up and call the Bank directly.
  • Protect your user names and passwords or PIN’s. Don’t give to anyone.
  • Contact the Bank regarding any suspicious activity.
  • Keep your social security number in a safe place
  • Report lost or stolen credit cards, debit cards, drivers license or id cards immediately
  • Shred documents that have personally identifiable information
  • Report any missed account statements to your Bank. They may have been stolen from your mail box.

Safe Online Computing Practices:

  • Anti-Virus Software – software designed to catch viruses, worms and Trojan horses that may infect your computer through emails you receive or programs you download from the internet
  • Firewalls – block outside attacks from hackers, filer infected files or emails, and alert you if an unauthorized user tries to access your system.
  • Encryption – data is encrypted, or scrambled, so if it is intercepted it is not easy to read.
  • Passwords – the more complex the password, the less likely it is to be deciphered by a perpetrator.
    Keys to good passwords are:
    • Use a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters
    • Create a unique password for each application.
    • Avoid using normal words that can be found in the dictionary
    • Don’t create passwords that are specific to you such as your spouses name or your birthdate
    • Change your passwords often
  • Software Updates – many viruses and worms take advantage of bugs in software. Updating frequently will protect your computer.
  • Log-Off – always log off and close your browser especially if using a public computer. The next person might be able to access your account if not logged off properly.

  • Sign up for E-Statements. This keeps your information out of the hands of fraudsters who steal your mail.
  • Do not give out your information to anyone who calls, emails or requests that you send it. Know who you are talking to.
  • Be knowledgeable about current scams so you don’t fall victim.
  • Report any suspicious activity immediately to your Bank. They can help protect your account.
