Chip Card

If you haven't already, you will be receiving a NEW, more secure, chip-enabled (EMV) debit card . Please follow the instructions that came with your card very carefully. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact our customer support department at 1-307-322-5222 or visit any of our locations.

What is EMV (Chip Card)?

EMV—which stands for Europay, MasterCard, Visa—is the new standard for card payment processing. It describes a transaction between a chip debit card and an EMV-enabled payment terminal. EMV transactions are much more secure than magnetic-stripe-card transactions.

Why are we switching to EMV?

First State Bank is switching over to EMV chip debit cards in an effort to curb counterfeit card fraud. Basically, the chip scrambles the transaction information when you make a purchase. Even if someone stole that information, it would be extremely difficult to use the data to commit fraud, usually in the form of unauthorized purchases. Chip debit cards are difficult to counterfeit because they’re encrypted.

How do you process an EMV transaction?

You insert the debit card vertically or horizontally, depending on the payment terminal as opposed to swiping it horizontally on a magstripe reader.
